President, The Mart Dock
Max McKee runs The Mart Dock, a 40-acre deep-water port on Muskegon Lake whose roots reach back to the Goodrich Transportation Company in the late 1800s. He also leads Sand Products Corporation, one of the oldest family-operated marine companies on the Great Lakes, and keeps a small fleet of historic vessels in the water at the foot of Mart Street.

Most American cities pushed their working waterfronts out of downtown decades ago. Muskegon did not, and Max McKee is a large part of the reason why. As president of The Mart Dock — formally West Michigan Dock & Market Corp. — McKee oversees 40 acres of commercial marine cargo, vessel servicing, and storage operations at 560 Mart Street, a few hundred yards from the center of town.
The dock handles aggregate and bulk cargo, services Great Lakes vessels, and stores boats, vehicles, and RVs through the Michigan winter. Alongside that industrial work, McKee and his family have kept several historic ships afloat and open to the public, including a D-Day veteran ship that has been tied up at the Mart Dock since 1948.
That combination — an active port that is also a piece of public maritime heritage — is unusual, and it shapes most of his work on the Muskegon waterfront.
